The municipal company Sociedade de Gestão Urbana (SGU) will close. The Vila Real de Santo António City Council approved today, Monday, the company's dissolution plan "with a guarantee of job maintenance", through internalization.

"This decision results from the accumulation of three negative net annual results by the company, which, according to article 62 of the Legal Regime of Local Business Activity, requires its dissolution", announced the Chamber of VRSA.

The closure of SGU it was, moreover, already expected, bearing in mind that in the latest reports of the Municipal Support Fund (FAM), an entity that is currently intervening with the municipality, the company's viability had already been ruled out “due to insufficient revenue allowing it to remain in operation”.

Today's decision is confirmation of this scenario, that the Mayor of Vila Real had already admitted that it was "practically an inevitability", who had accompanied her since she took office.

"The process will now go through two distinct phases: dissolution (1st phase) and liquidation (2nd phase), which will be submitted to the appreciation of the Municipal Assembly of VRSA", according to the municipality.

For Conceição Cabrita, Mayor, "the solution that is now being considered is that it will have less impact and will safeguard the jobs of almost a hundred workers, through its internalization - and the respective activities of the municipal company - in the organic structure of the municipality ».

According to the Chamber, the «option found involves the progressive integration of the strategic areas previously developed by VRSA SGU in the structure of the Municipal Chamber, taking into account that, at this time, equipment and sectors of manifest public interest – such as the Sports Complex , Municipal Swimming Pools, the Historic Center and certain commercial areas and public spaces – were under the responsibility of the municipal company».

«These are fundamental areas of management that were not part of the structure of the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António and that must be maintained and integrated, in essence, in the structure of functioning of the municipality», defended the mayor.

The goals of the dissolution plan "also involve the framing of SGU's debt in the reformulation of the Municipal Adjustment Plan (PAM), under execution for the municipality, allowing the municipality to assume its commitments and consolidate the assets and liabilities of the municipal company with the refinancing of bank loans granted'.

“This process represents another step in the municipality's financial consolidation – which seeks to restore its credibility with external entities – and is accompanied by the Budget Balance Program, which has already reduced municipal expenditure by around five million euros (more 20 percent)', framed the Chamber of VRSA.
