A renovation work of the Pescador Olhanense and Patrão Joaquim Lopes gardens, that flank the Municipal Markets of Olhão and are located next to the Ria Formosa, in the city's downtown, will cost 700 thousand euros more than originally planned.

After the first tender to award the contract, launched in February, having been deserted, the City Council of Olhão was forced to launch a new procedure, whose publication should take place «certainly, still in August», as well as to increase the base value of the work from 1,4 million to 2,1 million euros, revealed to the Sul Informação the mayor of Olhão António Pina.

The launch of the competition has already been approved by the Municipal Assembly. Now, it is time to wait for the developments of this new procedure – “a public tender we know when it starts, but not when it ends” -, so that the work can be finally awarded and the contract launched, something that “should only happen in 2020”.

Project for Jardim Pescador Olhanense

With this work, which was included in the plans of the Polis Ria Formosa Society, the City Council of Olhão intends to revolutionize the riverside area of the city. This project will complement the renovation that has already been carried out on Avenida 5 de Outubro, that of Municipal Markets, and foresees major alterations in the already existing gardens.

The projects that will be the subject of a new tender call for an intervention that favors the connection to the Ria Formosa, through, for example, the removal of the wall that exists today.

Structures will even be created on the current riverside promenade that project over the ria, two on the west side (Pescador Olhanense) and another on the east side, as a continuation of the monument to Patrão Joaquim Lopes, which gives the garden its name. The gas station will disappear.

To do all this, the 1,4 million euros initially planned, one million of which guaranteed by the Environmental Fund, proved insufficient.

«The increase of 700 thousand euros was determined following the feedback of companies. At the time when the competition was deserted, the proposals that reached us were in the order of 2 million, 2,1 million», revealed to our newspaper António Pina.

Taking into account that the tender will take place in the last months of 2019, the work may be able to be awarded before next summer. Despite having always pointed out the month of October as the ideal month to start interventions in the gardens – as happened with the 5th of October – António Pina does not reject that the work can start before the summer period, guaranteeing, even so, that the summer “will be taken care of”.

«It will still be seen how the management of this work will be done», concluded the mayor of Olhão.
