There was delays and those who showed discontent during the course of the works. Today, at a time when the redevelopment of Avenida 5 de Outubro, in Olhão, is practically completed, «even the most critical, the descendants of Velho do Restelo, are surrendered to the added value of the intervention», he assured the Sul Informação António Pina, mayor of Olhão.
The mayor from Olhano, contacted by our newspaper, gave the current status of this work, which only depends on details to be concluded.
The only thing missing is to get the new public lighting poles working, which are already installed but still not working, “because of EDP. Now, in the summer period, we do not accept any intervention. In other words, it will probably only be completed in September», revealed António Pina.
Even so, this will not cause any problems for merchants and the many tourists who visit Olhão during the summer, especially on this avenue, where dozens of restaurants are lined up, some of which are well-known.
The bulk of the intervention, namely the part that involved the road and sidewalks, has already been completed.
The intervention, carried out under the Polis Ria Formosa Program, led to significant changes in this artery, the Mercados de Olhão, taking into account that the road lost a lane, in this case, the parallel parking lane. This made it possible to gain more space for pedestrian circulation and expand the seating area, with advantages for establishments and customers.
Above all, it was possible to “remove the plastic tents that were the old terraces”.
“It was notorious that there was a renovation. We demand and do not leave more space for the existence of this type of terrace. Some accepted peacefully, others resisted, but they had to comply with our demands», said António Pina.
With the bulk of the works completed and normality restored on Avenida 5 de Outubro, now with a new face and much more space for both esplanades and for the circulation of people, the mayor from Olho believes that even the most skeptical «will modernize and improve ».
