The Municipality of Olhão today launched the public tender for the renovation work of the Patrão Joaquim Lopes and Pescador Olhanense gardens, located on the city's riverfront. The contract has a base value of 1,4 million euros and a completion period of 480 days.
This will be the second phase of a large-scale project, already underway, which will profoundly change the area surrounding the Mercados de Olhão, namely Avenida 5 de Outubro and the two existing gardens there. The idea of the municipality of Olhão is to start the work in October, as was advanced on the day the Chamber guaranteed one million euros from the Environmental Fund, to co-finance the work.
The redevelopment project of the two gardens, which was introduced about two years ago, foresees the transformation of these two spaces, favoring the connection to the Ria Formosa, through, for example, the removal of the existing wall.
Structures will even be created on the current riverside promenade that project over the estuary, two on the west side (Pescador Olhanense) and another on the east side, as a continuation of the monument to the man who gives the garden its name. The gas station will disappear.
Initially, it was planned that the work would be carried out, entirely, within the scope of the Polis Ria Formosa program, but the contract for the gardens was separated from that for the requalification of the avenue. Thus, it is Polis that is carrying out the intervention on the 5th of October, which is already underway.
The delays in the initial phase of this intervention led to protests by business owners in this area, where many restaurants are concentrated, which led to the Chamber – which had already expressed "concern" about the delays - and temporarily exempt merchants from fees.
Interested parties have 30 days, starting today, date on which the tender notice was published in Diário da República, to submit proposals.
