European Heritage Label “starts” at the Sagres Fortress

Exhibition aims to strengthen the sense of belonging to the European Union by its citizens

The exhibition “Europe starts here! – European Heritage Mark” will be on display at the Fortaleza de Sagres, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, from Sunday 1 September to 10 November.

The European Heritage Label «is an initiative of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union whose main objective is to strengthen the feeling of belonging to the European Union by its citizens, especially young people, based on the common values and elements of the history and cultural heritage, enhance national and regional diversity and increase intercultural dialogue”, according to the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (DRCAlg).

To achieve this goal, the initiative “distinguishes heritage sites, sites, monuments, cultural landscapes and documents that commemorate, symbolize European integration, the ideals, values and history of the European Union, with 38 sites having already been distinguished with this mark, one of which the Promontory of Sagres».

«In an emblematic and evocative Finisterre of a period marked by maritime exploration voyages and the expansion of European civilization on its way to the global project that came to define the modern world, the Sagres Promontory represents a vanguard of our historical heritage and is a symbol of European integration and a shared path of freedom, cultural exchange and democracy,” adds DRCAlg.

In addition to the Sagres Promontory, Portugal currently has two other sites distinguished as a European Heritage Label, namely the General Library of the University of Coimbra, one of the first in Europe to organize its collection in thematic catalogs and to allow access to books prohibited, and the Letter of Law for the Abolition of the Death Penalty (1867), which places Portugal as one of the first European countries to inscribe, in its legal system, a law for the abolition of the death penalty for civil crimes.
