Have you noticed that the sea water is warmer? know why

Surface seawater temperature has been higher than normal for this time of year

In July, the sea water is warmer, 2ºC above the usual temperature at this time of year and it is all due to a depression centered to the west of the Iberian Peninsula that is preventing the circulation of cold water to the surface. deeper, the so-called coastal outcrop.

As the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) explains, «in regions where coastal upwelling occurs, the temperature of the sea water is lower, since its origin is in deeper layers of the ocean and the wind predominates from north or northwest'.

However, «between the 1st and the 8th of July, the existence of a depression centered to the west of the Iberian Peninsula conditioned the wind regime along the Portuguese west coast, predominantly the west or southwest wind, preventing the phenomenon of coastal upwelling. occur', says the IPMA.

As a result, surface seawater temperature values have been higher than normal values for this time of year.

According to IPMA, "in July, the sea water temperature at the surface was around 18ºC and above 19ºC in the first days of the month."
