The PSD's Pontal Festival will take place, for the first time, in Monchique. THE A traditional initiative that marks the political re-entry of the Social Democrats will take place on the 31st of August, in the same place where the 1st Sá Carneiro rally was held in the Algarve, the viewpoint of this mountain village.
Thus, this party will be an opportunity to remember – and for some, relive – a historic date. But, according to David Santos, president of the PSD/Algarve, it will also serve to «give expression to a municipality in the Algarve's mountains», and should also «be seen as a manifestation of solidarity with those who were victims of the terrible fire of 2018».
In statements to the Sul Informação, Rui André, mayor of Monchique elected by the PSD and a member of this party, does not hide his "great satisfaction" for hosting this party which, until now, had only been held in two councils in the Algarve, those of Faro and Loulé, in which the Pontal area, also known as the Ludo forest, is located.
Speaking “as mayor of the PSD”, Rui André recalls that this “is the biggest party of the party, at national level”.
“It's much more than a party. It is the political re-entry, for yet another year in which there are legislative elections, which will mean that candidates will be presented and that a wide range of party personalities and national leaders will come here to Monchique».
Taking this into account, he commends the decision of the party leadership. "This gives a positive sign that the population of Monchique continues to need attention, not just in the days after the fires."
On the other hand, this will be a kind of return to the past, as it was at the Monchique viewpoint that, in 1975, the first Francisco Sá Carneiro rally was held in the Algarve.
This moment was recorded in photography by José Manuel Nobre Furtado, the first mayor of Monchique after the 25th of April – and «the only social democrat to win a Chamber of Alentejo and Algarve in the first Municipal Elections».
«This turns out to be an interesting curiosity, to return to the same place where, in 1975, Monchique was the great stage of a rally that is one of the few at the time with photographic records. Many of the people that appear in the photos are still alive and still active, so hopefully they are present. Thus, it will also be the reliving of the history of the PSD and Portugal», he said.
As mayor, Rui André also says he is happy, as he would be «if any other party had a party of this dimension in the municipality, it would always be well received».
According to the PSD/Algarve, in this Pontal de Monchique «various points of the country will be represented, with a stand assigned to each of the districts, so that the party takes place in an atmosphere of great conviviality and broad popular participation, as is its genesis », considers the PSD Algarve
In the coming weeks the final program will be announced, which will have as one of the highest moments the intervention of Rui Rio, president of the PSD.
