VRSA bar has new (and definitive) farolim

Work cost 500 thousand euros

The new – and definitive – farolim of the rebuilt breakwater at the dam in Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) was inaugurated on Friday.

The installation of this infrastructure and the reconstruction of the pier on which it stands motivated an investment of around half a million euros by the State.

The old maritime signaling equipment, which was provisionally installed but eventually became permanent, as well as part of the western breakwater of the bar, were destroyed in February 2018, following the passage of storm Ema through the Algarve..

In September, work began on recovering the pontoon and building a new farolim, now completed. The equipment was inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Ana Paula Vitorino, Minister of the Sea, and Conceição Cabrita, president of the Chamber of VRSA.

The Vila Real de Santo António breakwater was built more than three decades ago, «at a time when there was no longer any mining from the S. Domingos mine, but still at an important time to keep what was then the largest viable. commercial port of the Algarve. However, the construction of this breakwater was never properly completed. The crowning slab and the farolim for maritime signaling» framed the DGRM – General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services.
