Francisco Amaral leaves Castro Marim Chamber "on the 21st" and forces elections

The mayor of Castro Marim believes there are conditions for the early elections to take place "in early May"

The executive councilor PSD de Castro Marim, led by Francisco Amaral, will present his resignation on February 21, he revealed to the Sul Informação the Castro-Marinean aedile.

From then on, the Chamber "will enter into management" and will continue to do so until new elections are held, something that Francisco Amaral believes should "happen at the beginning of May".

In January, the mayor of Castro Marim had already announced that he and the others elected on the PSD lists would resign, considering that the political situation in the municipality had become "unsustainable". forcing early elections.

“I don't find any alternative but early elections. The weekly council meetings have turned into a massacre and the population of Castro Marim is not benefiting at all, quite the contrary. The works are delayed, some were even unfeasible. The Mobile Health Unit stopped for six months. This is unsustainable!” said, at the time, Francisco Amaral, in statements to the Sul Informação.

For the Castro-Marinean aedile, the “only solution is to give the people a voice”.

The decision of when the people will be called to vote, again, will be up to the Secretary of State for Local Authorities, who has “the responsibility to schedule new elections”.

However, doubts arose about what would be the procedure in the case of the resignation of a minority executive, as in the case of Francisco Amaral – in Castro Marim, the PSD is in a minority both in the Chamber and in the Municipal Assembly -, but the still mayor Castro -Marinian assured that «they have all been clarified».

"There will even be elections", he guaranteed.

«Until then, everything is at a standstill, the City Council and the Municipal Assembly. Everything is in a bain-marie», added Francisco Amaral.

In the 2017 elections, Francisco Amaral was reelected mayor of Castro Marim, but he lost the majority he enjoyed in the previous term.. The PSD won the elections, but only managed to elect two elements – President Francisco Amaral and Vice President Filomena Sintra.

The PS elected as many other councilors and the fifth place in the executive was guaranteed by José Estevens, former president of the Chamber by the Social Democrats, who this time proposed elections supported by the Castro Marim Primeiro movement, which had other elements that disassociated themselves from the PSD

a juncture which proved to be very difficult to manage, right from the beginning of the mandate., with the PSD executive seeing the opposition derail many of the measures it proposed.
