One of the four deaths on guarded beaches in Portugal happened in the Algarve

During the bathing season, there were 11 fatalities across the Portuguese coast, in areas under surveillance or not

The 54-year-old German tourist who ended up dying in hospital, after having entered pre-drowning at Fuseta-Mar beach, in Olhão, on 11 September, is one of the four fatalities in the guarded bathing areas of Portugal's coastline. Continental, revealed the National Maritime Authority.

AMN recalls that "the victim arrived at the hospital with vital signs, dying 12 hours after the accident." The man had been caught by a boatman on Fuzeta-Mar beach, having been removed from there and revived, thanks to the rapid intervention the lifeguard of Olhão, the lifeguards, a military service at the ISN, a nurse who was on site and the INEM, such as the Sul Informação then reported. Unfortunately, he ended up dying in the hospital.

The remaining deaths on guarded beaches on the Portuguese coast occurred on the beaches of Carcavelos (2) and Praia de Santo António, in Costa da Caparica.

In total, there were 11 fatal accidents, of which the 4 already mentioned in supervised beaches and 5 in unsupervised bathing areas: a 38-year-old man, drowned in Praia das Valeiras, in S. Pedro de Moel, on 6 June , in a case that is still being investigated by the Judiciary Police; a 45-year-old man, stricken with sudden illness, at Praia dos Pescadores, in Espinho, on 15 July; a 20-year-old South African who drowned in Funchal Bay on 27 July; a 38-year-old man, victim of sudden illness, in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, on 11 September; and finally a 40-year-old Polish man at Praia de Angeiras, in Matosinhos, for reasons still unknown, on 14 October.

There was also one fatal victim on a seashore after the bathing season, therefore no longer supervised (at Praia da Costa Nova, in Ílhavo, on 28 September, a 50-year-old man) and another in an unguarded sea area (Cova do Vapor, in the Tagus River, on the 25th of September, when a 16-year-old young man drowned).

During this bathing season, the National Maritime Authority also recorded 322 rescues, 969 first aid actions and 37 searches for missing children.

The 2018 Bathing Season took place between May 1st and October 15th.
