the fire which exploded this afternoon at 16:47 pm, in the municipality of Monchique, was considered dominated at 18:46. The initial strong attack with various air and ground means allowed this fire to be subdued in two hours.
Rui André, mayor of Monchique, speaking to the Sul Informação, said that in addition to the various means made available as soon as the alert was given, a tracking machine that was on standby “opened an access that allowed the fire to be stopped right there”.
The fact that the Fireboss planes are, during these days, parked at the Portimão Aerodrome, already loaded with water, ready to operate, was also an important help according to the mayor.
According to the Civil Protection website, 90 operational personnel remain in the theater of operations, supported by 31 vehicles and 5 air assets.
The fire broke out in Portela das Eiras, which is on the north slope of Fóia, a few kilometers from the center of the village of Monchique, from where the column of smoke was visible.
