From November 2017 to June this year, “Lavrar o Mar” presented a “diversified, international and quality” cultural program between the mountains (Monchique) and the ocean (Aljezur). The balance of the second edition can only be positive: in total, 42 of the 64 presentations were sold out, with around 9 participants and an overall occupancy rate of 96%.

“Lavrar o Mar” went through Rogil, Marmelete, Monte Clérigo and Odeceixe, taking by storm towns, cliffs, restaurants, markets, distilleries and municipal swimming pools, featuring a program in close relationship with the territory and local traditions. In total there were 12 shows, 64 presentations, three new creations and an international co-production.

According to the organization of the project, there was a «growing and consistent adhesion by the public that visited us: an incisive, generous and always available public to be surprised».

Compared to the first edition (2016/2017), there was an increase of 35% in terms of audience numbers, with heterogeneity “constituting an important factor of enthusiasm for us”.

For example, in the same show, «people with limited habits of artistic fruition were joined by veterans of cultural experiences, foreigners residing within the project's scope of action, people from all municipalities in the Algarve and some in Alentejo, as well as from other urban centers (more than 50% of Portuguese visitors from the Lisbon area) and also tourists passing through the region».

Tagliatelle in "Pasta e Basta"

The strength of the “project was anchored in the increased proximity to a participatory universe and local community involvement”.

There was, for example, the collaboration of the Senior Academy, in the new circus show “Klaxon”, but the cast of the aquatic theater “Mar Adentro” also brought together the local population, as well as the research laboratory and respective participation in “Cantina”, by the Belgian company Laika, the culinary theater “Pasta e Basta”, as well as the guardians of the Natural Park at the Credo Concerto-Oratory (in partnership with Rota Vicentina), among others.

“Lavrar o Mar”, which had the support of “365Algarve” and CRESC Algarve 2020, will have a new edition.

Collaboration with the local population is to continue, «in order to consolidate and reinforce the impact and relevance of the project in these so-called low-density territories, in terms of participation and volunteering, in the establishment and consolidation of partnerships or institutional and media visibility, providing a potential increase in investment and visibility of this geographic axis and the wealth and cultural heritage that it contains».

And just to give you a hint, in the next edition the theme transversal to the program… will arrive in a gaseous state and there will be artistic residencies, workshops, new circus, theater, dance, music and development of multidisciplinary projects.
