The wish is old and will finally be fulfilled. The old Basic School (EB) 2,3 D. Dinis, in Quarteira, will be completely demolished and a modern and «excellent» school will be born. In parallel, there will be the construction of a new Sports Pavilion, inside the school grounds.

The works have not started yet, but the forecast is that "in two, two and a half years" both infrastructures will be completed.

Taking advantage of the celebrations of the Week of the Municipality of Loulé, this Tuesday, April 8th, it was the day to present the project of the future school to the school community of Quarteira. At the beginning, it was even expected that the act of consignment of the work would be signed, between the Municipality of Loulé and the contractor, but an "unforeseen event", related to the health of the owner of the company that will carry out the works, postponed this act.

Vítor Aleixo, president of the Chamber, explained that, despite the postponement of the signature, "the start of the work is not in question."

Now, the mayor from Louletano said, the contractor's representative will have a meeting with the local authority and Miguel Boléu, president of the D. Dinis School Group, “in principle next week”. At this meeting, the day for the start of the works and under what circumstances will be defined.

It is certain that the project is done and was presented to the many teachers, employees and guardians who attended this public session. The new school will have 24 air-conditioned classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards, in addition to two laboratories, two ICT and music rooms and another two for the Visual and Technological Education (EVT) subject. In addition to this, there is also a room for the Technological Education (ET) subject.

The entire building will be built from scratch, in an investment of 4,8 million euros, but the entrance to the school will be in the same area where it is now: in front of the car park.

In fact, parking will be reduced, since the new building will exceed the current limits of the school.

The entrance will have a large atrium. On the left side will be the most administrative spaces. The right side will house the two wings with classrooms and a Resource Center. In the reception area, there will be four elements with images of the old school to perpetuate the memory of what that space was.

Everything was presented by the architect Pedro Mendonça, responsible for the project, who said that the idea is to place that school “at the forefront of technology”, becoming “an example for the students”.

Francisco Marques, Algarve Regional Education Delegate, also present at this session, said that the new D. Dinis School will be a «modern and up-to-date building» that will allow «children to stop learning in an old school».

But the news does not stop there. In addition to the construction of the school, a sports pavilion will be built, as well as a 7-a-side football field with a lawn.

This new infrastructure, which will be born in the same place where the current school pavilion exists, will be able to be used both by students, in Physical Education classes, and by everyone. There will be a gym space, as well as a cafeteria and six double changing rooms.

According to the forecast, put forward by Chamber president Vítor Aleixo to Sul Informação, both works will be completed in «two, two and a half years» and represent, in total, an investment of 11 million euros.
