Portimonense will play Sporting, Marítimo and União da Madeira in group B of the League Cup. The draw took place this Thursday, September 7th, and dictated a reunion between algarvians and lions.
In this last game, played in January 2016, Portimonense beat Sporting 2-0 and took an important step towards reaching the semi-finals of the competition.
The group stage matches start on 20 and 21 September. For Portimonense, the first day will be played on the 20th, with a trip to União da Madeira.
As for the second game, Portimonense will host Marítimo on 25 or 26 October. The group stage ends with a Portimonense-Sporting, on 29 or 30 November.
This draw was made with a condition. Belenenses filed a lawsuit against Real SC, which they faced in the second phase of the competition. If Real is acquitted by the Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the lineup of this draw will remain.
Even so, if Massamá's team is condemned, Belenenses will replace Portimonense, in group B, with the Algarve team moving to group A.
To reach this group stage, Portimonense eliminated Chaves. Vítor Oliveira's team will also meet Marítimo, with whom they played in the final of the League Cup, in 2016. the Algarve lost 3-1.
As for the other groups, the teams were distributed as follows: group A (Benfica, Braga, Vitória de Setúbal and Real SC), group C (Vitória de Guimarães, Feirense, Moreirense and Oliveirense) and group D (FC Porto, Rio Aves , Paços de Ferreira and Leixões).
In 2018 the final four The League Cup will be played in Braga and not in the Algarve, as happened this year.
