Since the 31st of July, Zoomarine's Porto d'Abrigo has been taking care of a leatherback turtle, which is the largest species of sea turtle in the world, weighing up to 900 kilos.

«This is the fastest reptile on the planet, reaching 35 kilometers per hour, and it is the most majestic and hydrodynamic of all the turtles. But its beauty, strength and size did not save it from a dramatic audacity at Praia da Cordoama, in Vila do Bispo. The “Odin”, a leatherback turtle, is now fighting for survival – and the battle will not be easy», says Zoomarine.

È that «this specimen of the species Dermochelys coriacea it weighs about 200 kilograms and exhibits numerous wounds on the head, on the anterior fins, on the “carapace” and on the eyes».

“Odin” will “remain several weeks in rehabilitation. The process will be long, complex and difficult – but it is the only option to try to save the life of this magnificent chelonian», according to Zoomarine.

This turtle will be monitored, medicated and fed, 24/24 hours, by veterinarians, biologists, nurses and
rehabilitation technicians.

«After the first 24 hours of anguish and anxiety (for the humans trying to save him), and of pain and confusion (for “Odin”), now, at Zoomarine (the home of the Algarve's smiles) a marine life fights for survival,” says Zoomarine.

“No effort will be spared – but with any luck, with a lot of work, and with the commitment of Zoomarine's rescue and rehabilitation teams, within weeks perhaps a magnificent and huge leatherback could return to the Atlantic Ocean, where they are beautiful, enigmatic and extraordinary marine giants are an inspiration and a metaphor for the great challenges of life in the wild», concludes Zoomarine.
