The restoration work on the ramps at the fishing port of Olhão will begin "soon", announced the mayor of Olhanense António Pina, during the official ceremony for the celebration of Fisherman's Day, in this municipality.

This is an intervention that, according to the Municipality of Olhão, "will benefit the hundreds of users of the infrastructure", some of whom were present at the session and who "received the news with satisfaction".

As is tradition, the City Council of Olhão took advantage of this day to reward fishing crews and professionals, as well as other entities. This year, the vessels Mestre António Lobo and Rio Nabão (drag), Rio Odiel and Cidade de Setúbal (siege), VIP and Beluga (local multipurpose), Belinha and Alexandrina Maria (coastal multipurpose), Guentaro Maru (framework) were honored.

The company Pinkatitude (aquaculture), José Colucas (walking shellfish collector), Leandro Vidal (younger fisherman), Joaquim Dias (maritime engineer), Hugo Martins (progressing fisherman), Tânia Monteiro (canning industry), Miguel Gaspar ( fishing investigation), Belinha vessel (merit in fishing) and Rui Nunes Ferreira, commander of the Port of Olhão and of the Maritime Police, (merit).

During the formal session, prizes were also given to the 1st and 2nd classified in the contest for the creation of the Fisherman's Day poster, Ana Sofia Cardoso and João Viegas, respectively, both students from the Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes Secondary School, and to the 1st classified in the “Homens de Mar” photography competition, Jorge Sousa. The works that were submitted to the competition are on display in Largo Sebastião Martins Mestre, in front of the Paços do Concelho building.

The ceremony also served to reveal the European funding opportunities for professionals in the sector existing in the MAR 2020 Operational Programme.

As Teresa Almeida, the manager of this programme, recalled, Mar 2020 “provides 508 million euros, to be applied in the fisheries sector (150 million), aquaculture (79 million), implementation of the common fisheries policy (67 million), increase employment and territorial cohesion (41 million), promotion of marketing and processing (132 million), promotion of integrated maritime policy (7 million) and technical assistance (32 million euro)'.
