Eça de Queirós, Guerra Junqueiro, Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the current minister of Culture Castro Mendes, Vinicius de Moraes, João Cabral de Melo Neto, Guimarães Rosa, Stendhal, Chateaubriand. All these writers from Portugal, Brazil and France, and many more, from the same countries and from different nations, were writers and diplomats.

To talk about this, the Consulate General of Brazil in the Algarve will promote tomorrow, Friday, the 10th, a round table on "Literature and Diplomacy: reflections and overlaps". It will be at 17:00 pm, in the auditorium of the Municipal Library Ramos Rosa, in Faro, with free entry.

Cláudio Guimarães dos Santos, vice-consul and head of the Cultural and Educational Cooperation Sector of the Consulate General of Brazil in Faro, himself a poet, in an interview with Algarve University Radio (RUA FM), explained that the initiative results from the opinion that there is “a relationship, which this round table is dedicated to exploring, between the fact of being a diplomat and the fact of being a writer”.

"Sometimes these things don't happen simultaneously: there is the case of writers heading for a diplomatic career, there is the case of those who became writers after becoming diplomats."

The roundtable, which will be moderated by Cláudio Guimarães dos Santos himself, has guests who will bring even more interest to the conversation. “We tried to invite people connected to literature and diplomacy and who were even writers”, explains the vice-consul.

«This is the case of Gonçalo Mourão, our ambassador to the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries, who in addition to being a diplomat is a poet», and who will be in Faro to “speak of his experience, in that between worlds, or in that union of worlds, between literature and diplomacy”.

Pedro Ferré, professor at the University of Algarve, will speak «About travel: the Self and the World». “From the title of the lecture”, guesses Cláudio Guimarães dos Santos, Pedro Ferré will speak “of this dialectic of the diplomat that moves to different countries and absorbs different cultures”.

Another guest is the poet Fernando Cabrita, who will talk about the case «of a prototype of a writer-diplomat, who later even left diplomacy, which is our poet Vinicius de Moraes, who we will pay homage to at Semana do Brasil, in October» .

But the vice-consul himself, as moderator, will also address "two prototypical figures that seem interesting to me: a writer-diplomat and a diplomat-writer, who are two things, to a certain extent, quite different."

The roundtable is part of the entire cultural program that the Consulate General of Brazil in Faro has been promoting and will strengthen this year. And the theme of Literature and Diplomacy arises naturally, not only because Cláudio Guimarães dos Santos is a poet, but because, as he explains, “it is not by chance that there are writers who are diplomats and diplomats who are writers, because one of the things what we do most in our career is writing».

The round table, which has free entry, guarantees the vice-consul, will not be “hermetic, for specialists”, on the contrary. It will be of interest "to literature professors, writers, students of the Humanities, International Relations, and the general public".

"With this profusion of information from the world today, it is clear that the topic of international relations ends up taking on gigantic proportions", so this roundtable and everything that is said will help to "better understand what is happening through behind the scene of the relationship between States and between Nations».

The round table ends with the offer of a “Porto de Honra” to those present, a moment organized by the restaurant “Tertúlia Algarvia”.
