Faro: Money for investment stays «in the bank» waiting for the government's “green light” in 2017

Faro_Town hallRogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, was left with 3,5 million euros «stopped in the bank» due to the Government's lead to the use of that money in investments in the county but, next year, he'll try again.

The mayor, in statements to the Sul Informação, considered that the decision of the Secretariat of State for the Budget "compromised the entire 2016 budget", but that, since there is money available to invest, this money "will remain in the bank and, next year, we will again ask for authorization to make this investment”.

About the decision that ended up postponing several investments in the municipality of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau considers it “very strange, because it is based on merit and subjective criteria”.

However, the mayor says that “does not want to believe that it is a political decision. We had authorization from the Secretary of State for Local Authorities, but the Secretary of State for the Budget did not authorize it, and maybe he doesn't know the county that well. But I don't want to think about it».

Source of the Chamber of Faro revealed to our newspaper that, according to the Secretary of State for Budget, "the investments in question do not justify the exception that a municipality in financial rebalancing can use the funds from the balance due for this purpose".

Also contacted by Sul Informação, Paulo Neves, PS councilor in the Chamber of Faro, said he had learned of the Government's decision through the media, since "the executive has not yet informed the councilors", not hiding his displeasure at the fact.

Even so, and noting that he still had to understand the reasons for the negative opinion on the Chamber's investment plan, he did not fail to express his concern. "I am concerned about the lack of application of the money resulting from the effort of the residents of Faro, who are the ones who pay the most taxes in the Algarve," he said.

The plan in question was proposed by the executive led by the social democrat Rogério Bacalhau and unanimously approved by the Municipal Assembly, already after negotiated with the opposition parties, in a majority both in the Chamber and in the AM.
