The Government did not authorize the Chamber of Faro to use around 3,5 million euros that were carried over from the last financial year to make a set of investments in various areas, from the improvement of the road network, to the requalification of schools and other public buildings, announced this Friday the Chamber of Faro.

According to the municipality of Faro, after having received the green light, in the first instance, from the Secretary of State for Local Authorities, on the 28th of August, the request for authorization to review the 2016 Municipal Budget, introducing more money and new projects, was denied by the State Budget.

"This ended up speaking negatively, questioning the merit of the investments in question, such as the interventions for the restoration of the public road, the equipping of schools and firefighters, social housing, improvements in parishes and several other achievements that were opportunely announced", according to camera of Faro.

At issue is, for example, the 'Requalifica 2' program for the renovation of the road network at various points in the municipality and works on public facilities.

“Thus, for the Government, none of these investments is a priority or essential for the development of the municipality. In this way, the global amount of 3.456.000 billion remains in the Municipality's coffers, without any use for meeting the needs of our municipality», summarizes the municipality.

The plan in question was proposed by the executive led by the social democrat Rogério Bacalhau and unanimously approved by the Municipal Assembly, already after negotiated with the opposition parties, in a majority both in the Chamber and in the AM.

“The local authority regrets the entire process and also the time wasted in its processing. In fact, between the submission to the Government of the request for authorization for this investment, on 15 July 2016, and the final decision of rejection, more than 3 months passed. Which means that, even if the pronouncement was favorable to the multi-annual investment plan, the launch and execution of many of the announced works were already seriously compromised", concluded the Chamber of Faro.
