hyperbaric chamberMore than fifty patients, in more than 600 sessions, have already been treated in the Hyperbaric Chamber installed a year ago in the Hospital Particular de Alvor, the only one in the entire Algarve.

Source from that private hospital group told the Sul Informação that “the most frequent cases were complicated wounds, namely those of the diabetic foot, sudden deafness and decompression accidents”.

The Department of Hyperbaric Medicine was inaugurated at the Hospital Particular de Alvor a year ago. The service has already treated many and varied patients: decompression accidents due to diving, diabetic patients and their complicated wounds, sudden conditions of deafness or blindness, carbon monoxide poisoning, among others.

Hyperbaric Medicine uses pure oxygen in a hyperbaric environment as therapy, that is, oxygen is administered at a pressure higher than the pressure at sea level, and the treatment is carried out in special equipment called a hyperbaric chamber.

This increase in tissue oxygen favors all healing processes, especially in hypoxic tissues, such as diabetic ulcers.

The chamber, the only one located south of Lisbon, is a “multi-place” type with a capacity for seven patients simultaneously.

Thinking about the most critical cases, it is equipped with a ventilator and a vital signs monitoring system, similar to those found in intensive care units.

On the other hand, the camera also has an air conditioning system and a video and radio entertainment system, making the treatment a pleasant experience.
