The fire that raged for more than 24 hours in the Monchique mountains was declared to have been under control by 19:30 pm today, Sunday, although some scattered outbreaks still remain, said the district commander of Faro of the National Civil Protection Authority.

Richard Marques stressed, in statements to the Sul Informação, that the fire is already “dominated within a perimeter, although there are some scattered outbreaks, to which we are attentive, to guarantee its extinction”.

The device will remain on the ground, since, he said, "this phase is as or more important than fighting the flames", requiring attention, "to avoid re-ignition".

Commander Richard Marques hopes that the night will help, if the temperature drops and the air humidity increases.

But everything indicates that the conditions of last night will be maintained, when the «The weather picture was very severe, with a temperature of 30°C, 15% relative humidity and wind intensification», facilitating the progression of the flames.

In this case, taking into account that the fire is already under control, the command hopes to be able to take advantage of the night to "consolidate the extinction of the flames".
