Fire in FoiaA man was arrested this afternoon in flagrante delicto setting a fire on the North slope of Fóia, in the municipality of Monchique, where a fire has been burning since 17:08 this Saturday. According to the mayor of Monchique Rui André, the man is «47 years old and is from the Loulé area» and will be present at the Court next Monday.

The mayor expects "a heavy hand from the Justice that cannot allow this type of criminal acts that are putting the lives of people and goods at risk" and praised the "excellent work of the team at the GNR territorial post in Monchique". The news of the arrest had already been advanced by Correio da Manhã.

The fire that is still active, with a front, and being fought by more than a hundred firefighters, was one of the many that broke out this afternoon in the Serra de Monchique, where, according to the 2nd operational commander of the Algarve Relief Operations Abel Gomes, there was "a generalized situation of fires".

The first one took place in Porto de Lagos, still in the municipality of Portimão, and many others followed, which the bombers tried to defeat as best they could, who “climbed” up the Serra to Fóia. This is where the arsonist was stopped.

Firefighters and other forces in the field have already managed to control two other larger fires, one in Porto de Lagos and the other in Caldas de Monchique.

Today, at around 23:00, the fire in Fóia was being fought by 105 workers, supported by 32 vehicles.
