Cleaning Recovo Culatra_1They stayed there for over 30 years, to the dissatisfaction of the local population, and they were already pointed out as an environmental problem. The last boats that were still anchored in Ilha da Culatra, located next to the housing nucleus with the same name, were removed from the site by the Maritime Police, in an operation in which many resources were mobilized and which ended up with one person arrested.

Cleaning Recovo Culatra_detentionOne of the owners of the nine vessels that still remained in this small recess of the Island, on the Ria Formosa side – about a year ago there were 90 boats – he had illegal weapons in his possession and threatened the agents who proposed to withdraw his boat with a very light.

The man, of German nationality, ended up tied up and taken ashore, where he is still waiting to be presented to the judge (see photo).

This was the only case of resistance. The other boats were removed without any interference and, in at least one of the cases, the vessel was even driven by its owner. Seven vessels, which were still seaworthy, were removed from the site. The remaining two, which are anchored on land and were at risk of sinking, will be removed in the coming days, using other means.

O Sul Informação he followed the operation and spoke with some culatrenses, who did not hide their satisfaction at seeing a problem they had been denouncing for a long time to be solved.

Tomorrow, in the morning, you will be able to see in our newspaper the complete report, with photos.
