Dália Paulo and José Gameiro were elected yesterday to the new direction of the Portuguese National Commission of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for the 2014-2017 triennium, this being the first time that the managing bodies comprise two directors of museums in the Algarve.

Dália Paulo, director of the Municipal Museum of Loulé, and José Gameiro, director of the Municipal Museum of Portimão, were members of the A list, headed by José Alberto Ribeiro, director of the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, who replaces Luís Raposo, former director of the National Museum of Archeology.

José Gameiro explained, in statements to Sul Informação, that this direction of the ICOM Portugal it integrates “the participation of professionals from outside the big cities”, namely from the two Algarve, which is unprecedented. "There are not only people representing major national museums, there are also professionals from museums in the regions."

Dália Paulo added that the new direction includes “museum professionals coming from projects of varying dimensions, related to local authorities”, such as her case and that of the director of the Portimão Museum.

"We will thus be able to bring reflection to the Algarve and give the Algarve a bit of that reflection," he added. «The great advantage is that we will be able to participate in the discussion of current museological thinking».

«The Algarve is a region with a past and present very different from the other Portuguese regions. On the other hand, there is no National Museum in the Algarve, so it is important to make our voice heard and share our experience in a national body like ICOM”, said the director of the Museum of Loulé.

As for the advantages that the presence of the two Algarve museologists will have for the region, Dália Paulo revealed that the debate and discussion about museums and the challenges that are facing them today will be brought to the Algarve, in a more formal or informal way, « but no specific dates or events have yet been set'.

The program for the new managing bodies of ICOM Portugal has three main objectives: to continue the affirmation of ICOM PT as an organization that is attentive and active in matters of museology and the museological community in Portugal, to affirm the relevance of museology professionals and to encourage museological communication processes in Portugal and in the Lusophone world.

The new directors of ICOM PT also intend to be very attentive to museum professionals, which is even their “priority programmatic line, given that the current moment that Portuguese museum professionals are going through requires particular attention to their careers or paths. , present work possibilities and future development opportunities'.

What is ICOM?

Created in 1946, the ICOM (International Council of Museums) is the only international organization that represents museums and their professionals on a world scale.

ICOM is an international non-governmental organization that maintains formal relations with UNESCO. Within the United Nations, ICOM has consultative status on the Economic and Social Council. In Portugal, the ICOM is represented by its National Commission.

ICOM is a diplomatic forum that brings together representatives from 137 countries and territories, a standard of excellence for museums, including in terms of ethics (Code of Ethics for Museums).

It is also a unique network of more than 30 museum professionals around the world, as well as a global intelligence exchange center comprised of 31 International Committees representing the specialties of museums.

ICOM carries out international public service missions, more particularly in the fight against illicit trafficking in cultural property, as well as emergency programs in the event of natural disasters or armed conflicts.
