Monchique is one of the eighteen municipalities in mainland Portugal that are today at «maximum risk» of fire, the most serious of a scale of five, informs the Meteorology Institute (IM), on its website.

In the Algarve, there are still nine municipalities at “very high” risk (Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, São Brás, Tavira and Alcoutim), five at “high” risk (Lagoa, Albufeira, Faro, Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António) and one in «moderate» (Castro Marim).

Viseu is the district with the most municipalities at maximum risk of fire, such as Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira, Vila Nova de Paiva and Castro Daire.

Three municipalities in the districts of Coimbra, Leiria and Castelo Branco, two in the districts of Santarém and Guarda and one in the district of Faro.
