Three more applications approved to rehabilitate City Council water supply systems

So far, 33 applications have been approved in 13 Algarve municipalities, corresponding to 25,83 million euros and 95 contracts and acquisition of services

Applications from the municipalities of Tavira (Taviraverde), Olhão (Ambiolhão) and Alcoutim have already been approved, worth more than 65,5 million euros, within the scope of Measure SM1 – Reducing Water Losses in the Urban Sector, included in the Recovery and Resilience (PRR), announced the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (AMAL).

The three applications represent a global investment of €6.576.166,88 and concern “the renewal of sections of pipelines with high levels of real water losses”.

The works to be carried out will allow «to obtain significant values of water efficiency, as they will rehabilitate 32,5 kilometers of network, allowing a reduction of 281 m465/year in the volume of real losses», highlights AMAL.

So far, through Measure SM1, three Notices have already been launched, 33 applications have been approved in 13 Algarve municipalities, corresponding to 25,83 million euros and 95 contracts and acquisition of services, and, in the vast majority of cases, the works are already underway.

The applications presented are analyzed and approved by a Management Committee, which includes elements from the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (AMAL), the Administration of the Algarve Hydrographic Region – Portuguese Environment Agency (ARH-Algarve/ APA) and the University of Algarve.

Measure SM1, managed by AMAL (through a financing contract worth 43,9 million euros, signed with the “Recover Portugal” Mission Structure), includes three aspects: Requalification of water supply networks; Installation of measuring zones; Control and creation of controlled pressure zones.

At the end of its execution, by 2026, it is expected that 125 kilometers of failing water supply network will be rehabilitated and will contribute to a 2hm3 reduction in water demand in natural systems.

This measure is part of the Water Efficiency Plan in the Algarve, which is part of the PRR, is coordinated by the Portuguese Environment Agency, through the Administration of the Algarve Hydrographic Region, and consists of six measures:

· SM1 – Reduce water losses in the urban sector (responsibility of AMAL)
· SM2 – Reduce water losses and increase efficiency in the agricultural sector (under the responsibility of DGADR/Environmental Fund)
· SM3 – Strengthen the governance of water resources (under the responsibility of APA – ARH Algarve)
· SM4 – Promote the use of Treated Waste Water (under the responsibility of Águas do Algarve)
· SM5 – Increase the available capacity and resilience of existing reservoirs/high water supply systems and reinforce with new water sources (under the responsibility of Águas do Algarve)
· SM6 – Promote the desalination of seawater (under the responsibility of Águas do Algarve)
