Opening of the Silves Capital da Laranja Exhibition marked by farmer protests

8th Silves Capital da Laranja Exhibition started yesterday and ends on Sunday

The opening of the 8th Silves Capital da Laranja Exhibition, which took place this Friday, February 16th, was marked by several protests by farmers against water cuts.

“In disunity this will be our end. It will definitely be our hunger. If this continues like this, what will humanity eat?”, reads one of the stands, where the boxes, which should be full of citrus fruits, are empty.

Water, irrigation and citrus farming were, in fact, the topics under debate at the “Conference XXI”, moderated by Elisabete Rodrigues, director of Sul Informação, and which was attended by Rosa Palma, president of Silves City Council, José Apolinário, from CCDR Algarve, André Gomes, from RTA, and the regional director of the Portuguese Environment Agency Pedro Coelho.

The 8th Silves Capital da Laranja Exhibition ends on Sunday, February 18th. Today there is concert by Carolina Deslandes, at 22pm, and tomorrow Jorge Serafim will take the stage at 00pm.

At the Exhibition it is possible to visit dozens of exhibitors, watch gastronomic demonstrations and even the National Cocktail Competition.
