Vale do Lobo wants to get everyone to separate biowaste

At first, this service will cover 300 homes, extending to the entire resort in November.

For the time being, it already includes all the restaurants and hotels in the area and now it will also expand to housing. The municipal company Infralobo has a new service that will allow Vale do Lobo residents to separate organic waste at home, free of charge.

This new valence was presented to journalists on the morning of Monday, July 31st, at Infralobo's headquarters.

The pilot project started about a month and a half ago, on the 12th of June, encompassing 20 restaurants and three hotels, «all of which are part of our area of jurisdiction», as explained by Carlos Manso, president of Infralobo.

During this period, it has already been possible to collect “40 tons of biowaste, preventing this waste from being sent to landfills”, he added.

And what are biowaste?

In these new containers, leftover cooked food, bread, tea bags and coffee grounds, butter and cheese, peels and eggs (raw and cooked), vegetables, fruits (with or without peel, as long as it is not hard) can be deposited. , leaves or spines and bones (up to 15 centimeters).

If you want to start making this separation, just contact Infralobo (289 096 583 or [email protected]). The municipal company will give a Kit which contains a container, 7 liters.

This container also has a chip which serves to open street containers – Infralobo has installed 12 so far. In addition, there will also be, on specific days, door-to-door collection.

According to Carlos Manso, this project represents "another step" on Infralobo's journey and follows on from "other projects such as the collection of selective waste", deposited in ecopoints, which municipal company already does, replacing Algar.

«The biowaste project is a challenge because we are going to implement it in the high season», he reinforced.

«Knowing that close to half of the waste produced by families can be regenerated and applied, whether in agriculture or for energy use, makes us believe that we can effectively improve our environmental behavior, as a community, in an extremely simple way» , he further said.

This waste, which also includes green waste from gardens, can be transformed into manure or natural fertilizer through composting.

This product can be used as an organic fertilizer in agriculture, gardening or in community gardens, such as the one in Vale do Lobo.

Moreover, composting brings with it advantages such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, by avoiding the decomposition of organic waste in landfills and the reduction of dependence on chemical fertilizers for the soil and plants.

At first, this service will encompass 300 homes, extending, in November, to the entire resort. It is estimated that it will cover 3000 families.

According to Carlos Manso, the Câmara de Loulé and two more municipal companies (Inframoura and Infraquinta) will also soon move forward with this bio-waste service – which, for example, Municipal Water and Waste Company of Portimão (EMARP) and the Chamber of Silves already has.
