All parishes in the municipality of Silves now have community composters, which will start operating on the 5th of December.

Residents of the parishes of Silves, Armação de Pêra, União de Freguesias de Alcantarilha and Pêra and União de Freguesias de Algoz and Tunes, will now have the possibility of separating biowaste at source and treating it locally, thus reducing the footprint and landfilling: something that was already done in the parishes of São Marcos da Serra and São Bartolomeu de Messines.

Through composting, the deposited waste will undergo degradation, turning into natural fertilizer. The compost obtained will be applied locally in municipal gardens, "contributing to responsible waste management and environmental sustainability", says the municipality.

To adhere to community composting, citizens must fill out the registration form available at Municipality portal and send it to the email address [email protected], or deliver it in person at Silves City Council or at the Councils/Unions of Parishes in the county.

At a later stage, registered citizens will receive a composting kit consisting of a support bucket and a guide with instructions.

The composters are located on Av. António Sérgio (Silves), Rua da Horta (Algoz), Urbanização do Olival (Tunes), Praceta do Mercado (Alcantarilha), Rua Pêra de Cima (Pêra), Urbanização Quinta dos Arcos (Armação de Pêra), Rua do Estádio Municipal and Fair Park (São Bartolomeu de Messines) and Motorhome Service Area (São Marcos da Serra).
