Faro welcomes XNUMX pilgrims ahead of World Youth Day

Until Sunday

More than a thousand pilgrims who will participate in the World Youth Day 2023, which takes place between the 1st and the 6th of August in Lisbon, are enjoying the various activities that the “Days of the Diocese” have to offer in Faro, from yesterday, the 26th, until Sunday, the 30th of July.

These young pilgrims, who will later travel to Lisbon, «make Faro their preparation for what is the biggest Catholic event in the world", according to the Chamber of Faro.

"Coming from different countries and continents, the young people are accommodated in various areas of the city, namely in school pavilions, and will participate in the various actions planned by the WYD Diocesan Organizing Committee", added the municipality.

These activities take place not only in Faro, but also in Loulé and Tavira.

Today, the 27th of July, pilgrims will be received by Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, and by D. Manuel Quintas, Bishop of the Algarve, in Jardim Manuel Bivar.

Young people will also participate in an environmental action, which will mark the “World Day for the Conservation of Nature”, tomorrow, the 28th of July.

«Within the scope of this initiative, around 400 young people will participate in the removal of the beach weevil in the Praia de Faro and another 400 will pick up cigarette butts on the streets of the city. These actions will end with a final meeting, on the Doca stage (at approximately 11:30 am), to raise awareness of environmental issues», describes the municipality.

Rogério Bacalhau stresses the need for young people to get involved in «care for our common home», challenging all participants to have gestures that demonstrate this concern.

«As mayor, I have responsibilities, but you are the future and, if you are not heralds of this need, active and assertive heralds, nothing will change. Therefore, the challenge remains: take care of the Earth, oppressed and devastated, without forgetting that 'we ourselves are earth', as the Encyclical Laudato Si, written by Pope Francis, says», underlined the mayor of Faro.
