WYD: Young pilgrims will collect cigarette butts and remove willows in Faro

The Algarve will welcome around 7.000 young people from all over the world to start their participation in WYD

The young pilgrims, who will be in the Algarve before the World Youth Day, will carry out, this Friday, July 28th, an awareness-raising and environmental protection action with the collection of cigarette butts and the removal of the willow, in Faro.

This initiative is part of Days in the Diocese (DnD), a kind of aperitif for WYD.

About 400 young people will be near the beach of Faro, participating in the removal of the beach weevil and another 400 will pick up cigarette butts in the streets of Faro, departing from the places where they are lodged, having as a meeting point the stage at the dock, where a conversation will take place, at approximately 11 am, on environmental topics and a “Pyramid of Beatas” will be made.

The idea is "to raise the awareness of all those who may pass by to the need to protect the environment and put rubbish in the appropriate places", says the Diocese of Algarve.

This action will have as partners the APA – Portuguese Environment Agency and the partners of the Environmental Volunteer Network for Water; the IPDJ – Faro, Europe Direct Algarve; the Lilaz Association; the Centro Ciência Viva Algarve; the GEA Project; the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF); the Be More Be Better Association; the Algarve Climate Strike; UAlg V+ and European volunteers.

The DnD programme, which runs from the 26th to the 30th of July, will include visits to key locations in the cities that will host the event. Meetings to share cultures, culture and sports fairs and summer balls, prayers and also these actions of environmental volunteering.

Each day will have a theme, which is linked to what will be done in the various Dioceses of the country, and several of them may involve the community/population (which is not included in the volunteers and host families).

The program will end with a Eucharist, celebrated at Estádio Algarve (Loulé) and a concert by Banda Gen Verde, on July 30th, at 16 pm, to which all those who wish to participate are invited.

The Algarve will welcome around 7.000 young people from all over the world to start their participation in this worldwide Catholic event.
