An 11-month-old baby died on Friday afternoon at the hospital in Portimão while awaiting transfer to the hospital in Portimão. Faro, who was without Pediatrics service, an official source told Lusa.

According to a source from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), when the teams were preparing to transport the baby to the hospital in Faro by helicopter, his clinical condition worsened, and the child ended up dying in the late afternoon.

INEM clarified that it received a request from the Portimão hospital at 14:18 pm to transport an 11-month-old child to a pediatric intensive care unit, with the baby being “duly accompanied” by the Pediatrics teams of the health unit.

“Finding the hospital of Faro without Pediatrics and with the Pediatric Inter-hospital Transport Ambulance (TIP) inoperative due to the lack of a hospital doctor, and TIP Lisboa occupied on another medical emergency mission, INEM then started the necessary procedures with a view to activating the helicopter from the Algarve, This activation was carried out shortly after 15 pm”, reads a note from the institute sent to Lusa.

When they arrived in Portimão, the medical teams started the procedures for the helitransport, but when they were preparing to start the flight to Faro “the baby suffered a worsening of his clinical condition which prevented transport and forced the team to return, at 17:45, to the hospital in Portimão”.

According to INEM, despite the efforts of professionals at the Portimão hospital and the institute, the death ended up happening later.

"INEM deeply regrets the outcome that the situation came to know and addresses sincere and heartfelt condolences to the baby's relatives", concludes the note.
