Book on Óscar Niemeyer's work presented in Faro

Brazilian architect came to design a building for the Algarve, but it was never built

The book “Um Niemeyer É Semper Um Niemeyer”, by Carlos Oliveira Santos, will be presented on the 29th of April, at the FNAC store in the Forum Algarve, in Faro, at 18 pm, in a session that will count on the presence of the author and Luís Matos, president of the Order of Architects' Regional Board of Directors for the Algarve.

The book «deals with the history of Oscar Niemeyer's project for Funchal, begun in 1966, which had, at Oscar's request, the collaboration of architect Viana de Lima. A grandiose work, which constitutes a heritage of modern architecture in Portugal», according to Carlos Oliveira Santos.

«It so happens that, in 1964, Oscar Niemeyer carried out a project for the Algarve, in Pena Furada, Vila do Bispo, but it was never built. This session will be a good occasion to remember this magnificent project», adds the author of the book.

The session on the 29th will also feature testimony by Álvaro Siza and a visual poem by Santiago Calatrava and a message by Paulo Niemeyer, all of whom are architects and collaborators in the book, like Paula Klien, responsible for the photographs.

This book is published on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the death of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, «one of the greats of modern architecture».
