Silves celebrates World Poetry Day with secondary school students

Includes meeting with students and the poetic-musical performance show “Metafisizando D'Outro Mundo” at the Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório

The Municipality of Silves is associated with the celebrations of World Poetry Day, marking this date, on March 22nd, with two initiatives aimed at students at the city's Secondary School.

Thus, on this day, there will be a meeting with the young poet Pedro Freitas, “O Poeta da Cidade”, at 10:20 am, in the auditorium of Escola Secundária de Silves, aimed at 12th grade students.

«At this meeting, Pedro Freitas will present his strong desire to disseminate poetry, as a way of making a contribution to keeping alive the memory of what we are as Portuguese people. His youth, his enthusiasm, his taste for the written and spoken word, will be the motto for this meeting to talk about his life, and his career as something inspiring for other young people », stresses the municipality.

This will be followed, at 15 pm, by the poetic-musical performance show “Metafisizando D'Outro Mundo”, which takes the stage of the Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório.

Aimed at 10th and 11th grade students, this show presented by “O Poeta da Cidade”, “combines the two most transcendent forms of art: music, in an almost divine atmospheric creation, by the hands of wake up sleep (Cláudio Martins), and the word, the materialization of the literary form, in a poetic show that tries to delve into the most intimate meaning of the question: What is a metaphysical love?”

It is a show focused on the awakening of true love, which Pedro Freitas decided to try to translate into «what became his first book of poetry, ending up recognizing that the literary form was not capable of condensing in itself all the meaning of this love, hence the need to transfer it to the stage, through this intimate format».

World Poetry Day aims to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

This ephemeris created at the 30th General Conference of UNESCO on November 16, 1999, intends to celebrate the diversity of dialogue, the free creation of ideas through words, creativity and innovation

Who is Pedro Freitas, “The City Poet”?

It all started when a cousin offered him the album “Pratica(mente)”, by Sam The Kid, when he was in the 4th or 5th grade. The poetic texts recited on the record by the father of rapper, Napoleão Mira, made him combine his taste for writing (which he already had, as he wrote verses for his mother or girlfriends at the time) with the spoken word.

Born in Lisbon, he grew up in Loures. His mother is a kindergarten teacher, his father a policeman. They always had normal reading habits, not being avid readers but not completely disinterested either. Like most of Pedro's friends, they preferred to read novels. Pedro always opted for poems.

In 2014, aged 16, he takes his first serious step. After seeing a poster at school, she decides to sign up for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's “Dá Voz à Letra” reading competition. He participates, reaches the final and, although he doesn't win, he meets the deputy director of the foundation's language program, who invites him to other identical events in the times that follow.

In 2016, he was already paid to act. He started by reciting poems by other authors, but it didn't take long before he presented his own texts. In 2017, he participated in “Got Talent Portugal” saying poetry, gaining some visibility. He passed the audition and made it to the live galas. In the same year, he started betting on social media.
