Sociology Course at the University of Algarve celebrates 20 years

The Sociology degree course at the University of Algarve celebrates its 20th anniversary, a date that will be marked on the 20th of March, starting at 10 am, at the Faculty of Economics. 

The opening session will be attended by Paulo Águas, dean of the University of Algarve, and Efigénio Rebelo, director of the Faculty of Economics.

In the morning, two round tables will take place. The first dedicated to the theme “The degree in Sociology at the Faculty of Economics at UAlg: past, present and future” and the second on “Alumni Experiences”, which will feature the participation of former students of this course.

In addition to the participation of several UAlg professors, starting at 14 pm, Fernando Luís Machado, professor at the Department of Sociology at ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and researcher at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES) will present “Sociology under observation sociohistorical theory: elements for a research agenda”.

Paulo Peixoto, professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) and president of the Portuguese Sociology Association, is scheduled to speak at 14:50 pm, centered on the theme “Being a sociologist in Portugal in the XNUMXst century”.

In the opinion of Ana Rita Cruz, professor of the course and member of the organizing committee of the celebrations, «over these 20 years the degree in Sociology has contributed to the training of around 400 qualified professionals, who work in multiple sectors of activities, from tourism to health, including social action, local and regional development, human resources, journalism, etc. Professionals prepared to work in a multicultural society, promoting social inclusion and respect for differences».
