In Monchique, «Let's go to the village»...but not for the Sausages Fair

«The idea is for people to visit the county for its essence and local potential, getting to know a genuine and differentiating territory, Monchique»

The Monchique Sausages Fair, with this name, format and usual date, has ended, to give way, this year, to a new initiative called “Let's go to the village – Show of flavors and knowledge – Traditional sausages and local products”.

According to the Monchique City Council, this «will become the first major event on the annual calendar, followed by the "Nights at the Lookout" in August, the "Walking Festival" and the "Monchique Christmas" in December, providing variety on offer, but always with the premise of highlighting what distinguishes Monchique».

«We will thus have local products, knowledge, the particularities of the municipality, nature tourism, pedestrian routes and the landscape as the basis of this offer», adds the municipality.

"Let's go to the village" will take place on the 27th and 28th of May, in an initiative that "presupposes, in its essence, a synergy with various agents of civil society, local and regional, citizens, economic fabric, institutions and associative movement".

The Câmara de Monchique admits that «this event will incorporate part of the dynamics of the Feira dos Enchidos, which will no longer take place in March».

«On the basis of this decision, were the high costs with equipment, namely rental of tents, platforms and other inherent, as well as a concept that fulfilled its mission, but that lacks rejuvenation and new dynamics», explains the municipality.

The objective is «to highlight the genuineness associated with local products and let them speak for themselves and enhance rural experiences».

For this reason, “Vamos à vila” «has a focus on local identity, where the voice and traditions of a community are the creative thread for this project, where the particularities of our municipality and our territory are raised. In this case, the constant small animations accompany the exhibitors, not standing out or overlapping».

«The idea is for people to visit the municipality for its essence and local potential, getting to know a genuine and differentiating territory, Monchique», adds the Chamber.

“Let's go to the village” will now “invite everyone to participate in sharing the knowledge and flavors of Monchique”.

Some streets in the village will be closed not only to organize the initiative, but also to change the rhythm and take the visitor to explore the main areas, nooks and crannies, so that the public space can be the stage of the party and celebration of traditions. «The identity heritage of Monchique will thus be highlighted», guarantees the municipality.

The commitment of the current municipal executive, presided over by the socialist Paulo Alves, also involves «highlighting celebratory and important dates, but also promoting other initiatives so that the cultural program is continuous and that it also happens outside of major events».

An example of this is the cultural program at Galeria de Santo António, with exhibitions scheduled until the end of the year, which «translates the commitment to revitalize a cultural space of excellence that was underused».

«The commitment to the educational community, to provide children and young people who do not have access to culture, is also another priority», adds the Câmara de Monchique.
