Desidério Silva, former mayor of Albufeira and of the Algarve Tourism Region, was elected chairman of the board of the Albufeira Promotion Agency (APAL), an entity that he himself helped to found and which he previously headed, on the 10th of January.

On the same day, the other governing bodies were elected for the three-year period 23/26, with José Carlos Rolo, who has accumulated the presidency of this association with that of the municipality in recent years, now assuming the presidency of the General Assembly. Carlos Santos continues as leader of the Fiscal Council.

«APAL has to be a local and regional forum where the public and private sectors can converge on a common objective of improving and promoting our destination, using new tools and methodologies that position us in an attractive, innovative way and generate return for companies associates and for the whole municipality», according to Desidério Silva.

«APAL is about to celebrate two decades of existence, it has already entered its majority and after a phase in which the tourist activity suffered a lot, the challenges now demand a new dynamic and a greater involvement of all», considered the new president of APAL direction.

José Carlos Rolo, who now has a new role in the association he headed in the last three years, noted that APAL faced «major challenges due to the pandemic, the immense transformation of tourist activity and also the current climate of uncertainty that influences the entire dynamic of the sector».

The mayor highlighted 2022 as being «a great year for tourist activity», but emphasized «the need to maintain a coherent course in the promotion of our destination in articulation with other entities, but also of constant improvement of what is the public space, the accessibilities and services that we can provide to those who visit us».

Rui Justo, president of the outgoing General Assembly, defended that «APAL makes perfect sense in the context of the economic dynamism of the municipality and of our tourist brand».

For the three-year period 23/26, APAL has a total of 22 members in its governing bodies, representing as many associates from the most diverse economic areas of the county.

The association brings together around 270 members and has carried out «an important role in promoting Albufeira, being present at various fairs and organizing various workshops, digital marketing campaigns, fam trips and other promotional events linked to the sector», according to APAL .

«The management is now preparing the Plan of Activities and Budget where it will present the actions to be carried out throughout this year. The first preparatory meeting took place last Wednesday, the 4th”, concludes the association.
