Albufeira hosts Volta ao Algarve and International Cross of Almond Blossoms in February

On the 18th and 26th

Albufeira will host two major sporting events in February: the fourth stage of the 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, on the 18th, and the 46th International Cross of Almond Blossoms, on the 26th.

«These are two more great opportunities to show the importance of sport and our ability to organize and host international events, at the time we are applying for European City of Sport 2026», reveals José Carlos Rolo, president of the municipality.

The fourth stage of the Volta ao Algarve is a race of over 177 kilometres, which departs from Albufeira towards Alto do Malhão, in Loulé.

The athletes and their delegations arrive at the Marina of Albufeira at 9:30 am, from where they depart at 11:10 am, to Avenida dos Descobrimentos, passing by some of the most popular spots for locals, such as Cais dos Navegadores, Alameda da Orada or Largo Jacinto D 'Ayet, on a symbolic “tour” of the city.

The official departure is scheduled for 11:20 am, on Avenida dos Descobrimentos. The 49th Volta ao Algarve takes place from the 15th to the 19th of February, with a total route of 795 kilometers, divided into five phases, with 16 international teams competing, four of which are professionals (Caja Rural- Seguros RGA, from Spain; Human Health, from the United Kingdom; Tudor Pro Cycling Team, from Switzerland and Uno-X Pro Cycling Team, from Norway), as well as nine Portuguese teams.

Another of the great sporting moments that still takes place during the month of February is the 46th International Cross of Almond Blossoms, on the Pista das Açoteias.

The “Golden Sneakers” competition takes place on the 26th and brings to Albufeira the best athletes in the sport in the world.

There are hundreds of participants who pass through the municipality and run in the 14 levels that make up the competition. Within each level there are different events and routes, including Federated, School and Adapted Sports.

Cristiano Cabrita, councilor responsible for Sport and Youth and vice-president of Albufeira, also says that «sport is growing in Albufeira, whether in terms of sports, clubs and supporters, but above all, in terms of training» so it is «very important that we host events of this caliber, which from year to year, captivate more young athletes, whether in cycling or in athletics and we are here to cherish these events, already mythical, which are a remarkable example for youth, of which we hope to be champions in the future».
