4,5 tons of hashish seized in a joint operation in the south of the Algarve

The vessels were taken to the port of Faro as it is the closest location.

4,5 tons of hashish, transported by two high-speed vessels, were seized about 60 miles south of Portugal, it was announced this Saturday, January 28. The joint operation of the National Maritime Authority, the Portuguese Navy, the Portuguese Air Force and the Judiciary Police also arrested five men.

In a joint statement, these entities say that it all started "following a routine maritime patrol mission by the Air Force".

In that mission, “an approach operation was carried out in international waters” to two high-speed, semi-rigid vessels “equipped with high-power engines”, suspected of transporting drugs.

The "successful" approach was carried out "by Navy means" and operated by marines, allowing "interception, detention of crew members and seizure" of the drug.

The vessels were taken to the port of Faro as it is the closest location.

This action resulted in the apprehension of around 127 bales of hashish, with a total weight of approximately 4,5 tons. Five men, aged between 36 and 49, were also arrested.

The detainees will be presented to the competent Judicial Authority.

The investigation is being carried out by the Judiciary Police.
