A recreational fisherman who, at 9:00 am on Wednesday, the 28th, fell overboard from the cliffs in the Ponta da Atalaia area, on the coast of Aljezur, was rescued by an Air Force helicopter.
The 53-year-old man suffered serious injuries, with suspected head and neck trauma.
Commander Pedro Fernandes da Palma, captain of the Port of Lagos and head of the Maritime Authority, told the Sul Informação that the man "was fishing when he was taken away by a tidal wave". «Already in the water, he managed to swim to a rock from which he called for help».
The injured man had "a head injury with a 10-centimeter wound and also complained of pain in the vertebrae", the same source said.
After being transported to land by the helicopter, the injured man was immobilized by the INEM team who moved to the edge of the cliff. Rescue was also considered by a wide-angle team of firefighters, but due to the state of the sea, it was necessary to wait for the arrival of the aerial medium. He was later transported to a hospital.
O Sul Informação confirmed, with the mayor of Aljezur, that the injured fisherman is the well-known photographer João Mariano. Mayor José Gonçalves added that he was at that moment with the photographer's family, awaiting more information, namely on which hospital he was transported to.
At the accident site, near Arrifana beach, there were 22 operators, from firefighters, GNR, INEM and the Maritime Authority.
