Saramago celebrated in Loulé with “The Greatest Flower in the World”

On Wednesday

The centenary of the birth of José Saramago will be marked in Loulé with the show “A Maior Flor do Mundo”, which will take place on Wednesday, the 16th, at 21, in the Municipal Library of Loulé.

In this Caixa de Palco show, «Saramago becomes a character and tells us that he once had an idea for a children's book, he invented a story about a boy who gives birth to the biggest flower in the world», according to the Câmara de Loulé .

«Tired of always playing in the same places, a boy decides to leave his village, cross the river and go up the slope. There, he finds a withered and fallen flower that needs rescuing. This boy does his best to give the flower a new lease of life. It is from this fantasy of grandeur that the work is born”, he adds.

Readers are thus «called to play a fun game, as Saramago tells them the story of the boy and the flower not as if it were the real story, but as if it were just the outline of what he would have told if he had the power to do the impossible: to write the best story of all time».

“By playing the game with the author, young readers will know that no one has ever had or will have that power. They will also know that literature is the place of the impossible: the boy in this story makes a simple flower give shade as if it were an oak tree», concludes the municipality0.

The initiative is free entry.
