President of CCDR Algarve defends the importance of a National Strategy for Archeology

Algarve Archeology Meeting ends this Saturday in Silves

The chairman of the Algarve Regional Development and Coordination Commission (CCDR) highlighted, at the opening session of the 10th Algarve Archeology Meeting, the CCDR's mission in the D of regional development, within the framework of public policies for economic and social development in the country. , including Culture, Cultural Heritage and Archeology.

In this context, José Apolinário defended the importance of a National Strategy for Archaeology, whose bases were under public discussion in the year 2021, seeking to address four themes: the national plan for archaeological works, the management of archaeological remains, preventive archeology and monitoring and impact of intensive agriculture and afforestation and reforestation on the archaeological heritage , in line with the text of the Convention of Faro 2006, according to which “every person, individually or collectively, has the right to benefit from the cultural heritage and to contribute to its enrichment”.

In the same speech, the president of the CCDR Algarve also defended the importance of adopting more specific measures for the conservation of cultural heritage sites, in consultation between the entities of the direct administration of the State and the Local Authorities, leaving the availability of the CCDR of the Region of Algarve to work on collaborative and concertation projects around the archaeological remains in the Rio Arade.

Within the scope of the Algarve Regional Program – CRESC Algarve 2020, European funds managed in the region have financed several projects of archaeological research and enhancement of the archaeological heritage, proposed by the University of Algarve, Municipalities and Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, contributing to the densification of knowledge and preservation of the Algarve's heritage.

Until this Saturday, Silves is hosting the 10th Algarve Archeology Meeting, with a vast scientific program focused on Maritime Heritage and Archaeology, Medieval and Modern Archaeology, Problems of Urban Archaeology, Heritage Management, Roman Archaeology, Proto-historical Archeology, Pre- History and Good Practices in Preventive Conservation.

At the opening of the meeting, Rosa Palma, Mayor of Silves, underlined the Municipality's commitment to the preservation and safeguarding of cultural heritage and the Municipality's commitment to the various projects underway in Silves and in consultation with neighboring municipalities.

The various stakeholders made a point of thanking the public service provided by Rui Parreira, an archaeologist and senior technician from the Algarve Regional Directorate of Culture, recently retired.

The opening session also included interventions by the rector of the University of Algarve (Paulo Águas), the deputy director of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the regional director of Culture (Adriana Nogueira).

The 10th Algarve Archeology Meeting is promoted by the Municipality of Silves, in partnership with the University of the Algarve, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, and aims to promote the most relevant archaeological works that took place in the region. of the Algarve in the last decade, by promoting scientific debate on issues related to archaeological activity in the geographical context of the Algarve, and raising awareness of the social promotion of archaeological activity, preservation and enhancement of the archaeological heritage.
