João de Deus House Museum reopens «more functional and modern» after works

João de Deus, pedagogue of the “Cartilha Maternal”, was born in São Bartolomeu de Messines

The João de Deus House Museum, in São Bartolomeu de Messines, will reopen to the public next Monday, November 7, after “fundamental” works that made it “more functional and modern”. 

Among the novelties is the creation of «new signage that will draw the attention of visitors and users to the new and discreet entrance to this space which, from this day onwards, will be via Rua do Arco».

The visit route will also «be aided by the letters of the Maternal Booklet that will guide and guide its visitors».

On the other hand, it should be noted that, over the course of several months, various rehabilitation and improvement works were carried out on the building, in addition to the treatments, preservation and safeguarding of the house's documentary and museographic collection.

These works allow Casa Museu João de Deus «to present new reorganized spaces and new services, namely with the availability, in digital format, of several works existing in its documentary collection».

The reception area was also refurbished, with not only customer service now operating, but also a shop space, where visitors can purchase various municipal publications and merchandising allusive to the poet and pedagogue.

An area of coworking (intended for use by all who need a space to work) and an exclusive reserve area dedicated to the photographic collection of Casa Augusto / Augusto Pires Martins.

This new space will allow Casa Museu to have a service similar to a photo library, providing thousands of photographic negatives with reports of weddings, baptisms and festivities recorded by this local photographer, between 1950 and 2001.

«The beautification of the outdoor spaces (patios) and the remodeling and modernization of the signage in the exhibition spaces, the conditions of wi-fi access, the work areas and the lighting of the exhibition areas, were other interventions that deserve to be addressed. visit to this “new” João de Deus House Museum», says the Municipality of Silves.

The reopening will be marked with a jazz concert with the Trio Timewheel of the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve, at 18:30 pm, a commemorative initiative for the 25th anniversary of this cultural space.
