The Dutch rider who suffered a serious accident at the Superbike World Championship dies

The Kawasaki rider was, this year, one of the contenders for the title

The young Dutch pilot Victor Steeman, who suffered a serious accident at the World Superbikes, last Saturday, October 8, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, announced the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM).

The accident, which also involved Gonzalez Perez (Spain), both in Kawasaki Ninja 400, happened last Saturday afternoon, during the SuperSport300 race.

Victor Steeman, who suffered "polytraumas and head injuries", was immediately transported by helicopter to the Hospital de Faro.

In a statement, the FIM says that, "despite the effort made by the medical personnel of the circuit, the officials and the people in the hospital, sadly, Steeman succumbed to the injuries".

In the statement, the FIM, together with the WorldSBK paddock and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, express their feelings at the death of the young driver, 22 years old, who spent three days in hospital in critical condition after being hit on the head by another rider following a fall of his motorcycle in the last corner of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

The Kawasaki rider was, this year, one of the contenders for the title, having already won four races during the season.

In its statement, the FIM included a message from Steeman's family: “One thing we've always feared as parents of motorcyclists has happened now. Our Victor failed to win his last race. Despite the unbearable pain and grief, we are very proud to have shared with you our hero, who, when he died, saved five other people by donating his organs. We want to thank everyone for the way they lived with us the last few days. We will miss Victor enormously.”
