PAN Olhão asks for Monitoring Commission on Domestic Violence, Gender and “Bullying”

The proposal will be discussed at the Municipal Assembly.

A proposal for the creation of a Monitoring Committee on the Problem of Domestic Violence in a Family Context, Gender-Based Violence and Bullying in School Institutions, presented by PAN Olhão, will be debated on the 29th of September, in a session of the Municipal Assembly of look.

According to Alexandre Pereira, municipal deputy for the PAN in Olhão, “the data released in the 2021 Activities Report of the CPCJ (Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People) of Olhão reveal worrying numbers and with a growing trend”.

In the same vein, “data from the 2021 Annual Report of the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) show that this continues to be a scourge in our country. We continue to fail everyone, as a community, when we lose lives to violence, including violence against children,” he adds.

“The latest APAV report reveals that, on average, there are 54 cases of domestic violence per day, in fact, little or nothing has changed in the national reality with regard to domestic violence. According to the report by the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV), for last year, 25.839 crimes were recorded, an average of 70,7 per day. Most of which, 76,8%, referred to cases of domestic violence, specifically a total of 19.846 cases, which translated into a daily average of 54,3 cases”, the PAN municipal deputy also stresses.

“Although this is a crime that crosses gender and age, the truth is that, due to existing socio-economic inequalities, women and children continue to be the main victims of this scourge that constitutes a real threat to People's Security”.

Now, according to Alexandre Pereira, “municipalities have more and more competences in terms of education and it is essential to prevent violence in these contexts, namely bullying, it is therefore essential to listen to educational agents, such as teachers, families, associations of fathers and mothers. , so that the municipality can have its answers better consolidated in this matter. There is also a need to listen to civil society, institutions and the different political forces, so that strategies for action and monitoring can be jointly defined”.

“The existence of municipal strategies such as the Municipal Plan for Equality and Non-Discrimination, the Team for Equality in Local Life and the creation of accommodation for victims of domestic violence, already demonstrate that this scourge deserves the concern of all , but as long as there is one victim, none of us can rest easy and we must continue to reflect and devise strategies.”, he adds.

The PAN deputy also states that “we constantly continue to make the same mistakes and insist on the same policies, we continue to react when the focus should be on prevention. Since this is a structural problem of society, only acting on the prevention side will we be able to achieve positive results”.
