UAlg is part of a project that will study underwater cultural heritage with robots

The project will have a technology demonstration site at the archaeological site of the “Liberator” bomber, sunk in World War II off the coast of Faro

The underwater cultural heritage will be studied by robots, with the support of the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) of the University of Algarve (UAlg).

CIMA saw the approval of a European project financed by the Horizon Europe program, with the participation of 17 institutions from 8 countries. The objective of the THETIDA project is to develop new technologies in the study and protection of underwater cultural heritage.

In this project, different platforms and sensors will be developed, including the use of underwater robots (AUV) for mapping and safeguarding archaeological sites and underwater artefacts.

«CIMA, through its modeling group, led by researcher Flávio Martins, will develop high-precision mathematical models that will make it possible to predict the behavior of the seabed and its effect on the cultural heritage that exists there», explains the UAlg.

The Centro de Ciência Viva do Algarve (CCVAlg) is also part of the project, which will be coordinated by Cristina Veiga Pires, executive director of the Center and professor and researcher at UAlg. CCVAlg will make known to society, with special emphasis on the younger classes, the results of the project and the importance of the underwater cultural heritage of the Algarve coast.

The project will have a technology demonstration site at the archaeological site of the “Liberator” bomber, sunk in World War II off the coast of Faro.
