Albufeira has already implemented twelve measures to save water

President José Carlos Rolo asks the population to help and be attentive

Closing of Municipal Swimming Pools during August and September, closing of ornamental fountains, use of treated wastewater for irrigation of public spaces, with irrigation being carried out mainly at night, implementation of the drip irrigation system, suspension of irrigation in sectors of green spaces, mainly in grass areas, the suspension of the placement of irrigation meters, the installation of pressure gauges for monitoring purposes and the reduction of irrigation time by around 30%.

These are the main measures to reduce water consumption from the public network, which have been implemented by the Albufeira City Council, given the current situation of severe drought that plagues the country, in general, and the Algarve region, in particular. .

The mayor draws the attention of the population to the «conscious and thrifty use of water, avoiding waste», so that in the future there is no shortage of water in the taps.

«There are small gestures that can make a difference and that allow you to save several liters of water per minute, namely in the use of the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, garden, swimming pools and vegetable gardens», underlines José Carlos Rolo.

The mayor took the opportunity to ask the citizens that, "whenever they observe a rupture of water in the public network, in landmarks and fire hydrants, safety taps next to the meters, poorly directed or damaged irrigation sprinklers and improper connections to the public supply, inform the Municipality of Albufeira through the SMARTCITY application, clicking here, or the Blue Number: 808 202 274'.

These are the measures to combat drought implemented by the Municipality of Albufeira:

1. Closure of Ornamental Fountains, except for the fountain at Rotunda dos Golfinhos;

2. Closing of Municipal Swimming Pools in August and September;

3. Suspension of the placement of irrigation meters;

4. Beginning of the restructuring of green spaces, with the replacement of species with high water consumption by indigenous specimens, more sustainable and adapted to the climatic conditions of the region. This measure will result in the reduction of water consumption in the central separator of the road axis by approximately 14 m3 per day, during the high season;

5. Preferential implementation of drip irrigation systems;

6. Use of waste water in some irrigation, washing floors and containers;

7. Watering preferably during the night;

8. Suspension of irrigation in some sectors of green spaces, mainly in grass areas;

9. Analysis of irrigation for the installation of pressure gauges for monitoring purposes, thus optimizing the water supply from the public irrigation network;

10. Reduction of watering time by approximately 30%;

11. Requalification and use of century-old hydraulic irrigation infrastructure (drills and wells), which allows the use of water for other purposes such as washing floors and containers for collecting solid urban waste;

12. Reuse of water from the Parque de Vale lagoon Faro for irrigation of some green areas, with the installation of aeration pumps, in order to reduce the load of nutrients and eutrophication.
