Teaching children and young people from the Algarve to use the technological “fishing rods” that are their smartphones, tablets and computers is the objective of GeekLab, the new Creative Laboratory of ETIC_Algarve, which was inaugurated last week, on the premises of this school, at the Municipal Market of Faro.

This is «a new training offer for children from 8 to 16 years old», in the areas of the creative industries, with a strong focus on programming.

«We will work from June 15th with summer offers. But this space is meant to be open all year round, offering courses within our areas of expertise, but mainly in terms of programming. We are going to invest a lot in everything that has to do with programming, because it's a small thing that the cucumber is twisted and this is a very important and interesting area», he explained to the Sul Informação Nuno Ribeiro, director of ETIC_Algarve.

GeekLab appears because, in the view of the head of this school, «the kids have a technologically untidy room». In other words, despite having «access to all kinds of technology» and, as such, having «the rods», many of them «do not know how to fish».

«With GeekLab we want to give them these tools and make them know and work towards, not only increasing their knowledge, but also improving their teaching response, because more and more teachers ask for different, more dynamic presentations. » he added.

In June and July, GeekLab starts with Audiovisual Vacations and courses, lasting one week each, in the areas of video games, sound and animation.

The 1st edition of the Audiovisual Holidays takes place between the 20th and 24th of June and the 2nd edition between the 18th and 22nd of July.

As for the courses, on the 27th of June the training “Cria o Teu Som” begins. In the month of July, the courses “Cria o Teu Jogo” and “Personagens para Animação” start, respectively, on the 4th and 12th.

In addition to this offer focused on school holidays, the ETIC_Algarve GeekLab will also offer «courses throughout the year, which can occupy one or two afternoons or mornings per week».

Nuno Ribeiro is already thinking of «making known in schools of Faro this new training offer».

«We are going to start working in this direction, because this has a lot to do with school schedules. Nowadays, a child leaves classes and can go to judo, to English, to music. In this case, you can come to Geeklab », she said.

Now, says the director of ETIC_Algarve, it is just a matter of waiting «that people understand what we are offering and that they are committed to giving their children training in the area of creative industries, which is increasingly fundamental».
