Get ready for the heat, temperatures will rise

Weather state will be conditioned by hot air mass

Temperatures will rise from this Thursday, May 19, and until Saturday, 21, warns the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

According to the IPMA, the weather in the coming days will be conditioned by “a mass of hot air over the mainland associated with a southern current, resulting in a gradual increase in temperature”.

In addition, “the transport of dust from North Africa will also take place, at medium and high levels of the troposphere, which should affect the territory on the 20th and 21st, with the possibility of reduced visibility”, reads the alert given by the Institute.

According to the IPMA, Saturday is expected to be the hottest day, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 38°C in the regions of the Guadiana, Tagus and Douro valleys being possible.

For Faro, the IPMA points out that on Saturday temperatures may reach 28°C. In Beja, the maximum will be 33°C.

On Sunday, the 22nd, «a significant drop in maximum temperature is expected, associated with a flow from the west quadrant».

The alert launched by the IPMA is in effect between this Thursday and 23:40 pm on Saturday. «During this period, the danger of fire will gradually increase until the 22nd of May, with the highest values in the interior North and Center and in the Algarve», the institute also stresses.
