Algarve marks World Earth Day with cleaning actions and environmental journey

Until the end of the week

Garbage collections on the beach, at sea and on cliffs and a walk are some of the initiatives with which the Algarve will celebrate World Earth Day this week.

The Oceano Azul Foundation once again challenged national organizations to promote initiatives for the protection of the Ocean and there were several Algarve entities that accepted the challenge.

Tomorrow, at 9:30 am, students from Vila Real de Santo António will participate in a “Marine litter monitoring campaign” at Praia de Santo António, during which “they will collect and record information about the debris found, as well as take the opportunity to remove as much of possible garbage from the sand", according to the Oceano Azul Foundation.

On Wednesday, the 20th, the Divespot diving school promotes an underwater cleaning in Armação and Pêra.

On the 23rd of April, Saturday, at 9:30 am, the environmental route “From the Land to the Sea” will be promoted in Tavira, on the cultural, historical and natural heritage around this city.

This tour, promoted by the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, «combines the history of the city with the local salt culture, the marsh of the Ria Formosa and its biodiversity. It includes a visit to Arraial Ferreira Neto, an old support structure for tuna fishing».

On the same day, a cleaning of the sands of Manta Rota beach, in VRSA, will be promoted.

On the 24th of April, at 10:00 am, the Bodyboarders Association of Sagres and Joana Schenker promote a cleaning of the cliffs and pedestrian paths next to the Farol of Sagres.

As of today, more than 150 face-to-face and virtual initiatives are planned, organized by more than 110 organizations across the country, under the theme “The Ocean is our land”.

«From exhibitions and conferences, to coastal cleaning actions and special classroom sessions, activities for all ages will take place over the course of seven days. From north to south, in the Azores and Madeira, the objective is to mobilize and raise awareness among civil society about the importance of the Ocean for Planet Earth», concludes Oceano Azul.
